This heater is designed for the induction heating of the ends of bolts with a round cross-section up to forging temperatures. It consists of a capacitor array, a thyristor-based converter, and the inductor. The personnel platform serves two functions: Aside from offering easy access to the capacitor, on this the platform the capacitor bank is located. The inductor is also hung on the platform, where three different motions are available. Two hydraulic pistons enable movement lengthwise and inclination. A motor/gearbox enables the third motion. It is used to adjust the position of the inductor and regulate the length of the bolt shaft that is actually heated. The thyristor converter is located next to the platform and is connected to the capacitor bank via flexible mid-frequency cabling. System control is handled by a Siemens programmable logic controller. The temperature of each heated piece is measured by a non-contact pyrometer and the date/time stamp and temperature value can be saved to the PLC memory. The operator interfaces with the induction heater using the control panel which includes push-buttons and an interactive display. The heater parameters (desired temperature, power level, temperature ranges, employee login, etc) are all set on the PLC display. This same display also communicates any faults in the induction heating system to the operator.
